I somewhat recently started working for a matcha company. Although I still have a pistachio milk cappuccino daily, I do love the color, the taste, and the origins of matcha (specifically this one). I know every time you’re on a great vacation, you say you’re going to move. HOWEVER, Japan is a place I may need to move to. First of all, I’d like to eat a fully Japanese diet, second, the subway is cleaner than my apartment and the design of everything down to a to-go cup is just engineered perfectly with a minimalist chic aesthetic. I am a big fan of Japan. Below are some of the things I’ve done throughout my two journeys to Japan that I honestly can’t stop thinking about.
Matsumoto — Hidden in the mountains of Matsumoto is one of the best guest experiences I’ve ever had. Tobira Onsen is honestly the most magical place. Think Canyon Ranch but rich with genuine culture, seasoned but gut-healthy food (Michelin quality). You basically cannot have any anxiety whilst here. It’s a 3-hour train northwest of Tokyo airport and well worth the journey. I may honestly have to do an entire post on this place.
fun fact: If you’re not aware of what an onsen is (I wasn’t until visiting Japan), an onsen (温泉) is a natural hot spring in Japan, often associated with bathing facilities or traditional inns (ryokan). These hot springs are heated by geothermal activity and are rich in minerals, which are believed to have therapeutic benefits.
Trunk Hotel — The twenty-five-bedroom hotel is defined by its details. It’s definitely a little bit of a splurge, but the rooftop pool may make it worth staying for a night! Each room feels like you’re in the park right outside.
Cafe Wad — I would take the train to Osaka if you have the time. It feels a bit like going to the West Coast — people are more laid back, street style is less polished and lots of aspiring DJs are around. There is a great cafe culture too. Cafe Wad is the place to go. Ready about their teas, talk to the staff, and attempt to restrain yourself from buying all the tableware.
For the coffee-obsessed — This cafe has one of the craziest cups of coffee I’ve ever tasted. Glitch has cafes in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. It’s giving wine tasting (also in the price of a cup). I also now really need the coffee carafe.
5. Vintage in Kyoto — BIG TIME
Breakfast in Kyoto — Kissa Kishin is the cutest space with the yummiest French toast and homemade granola. Their matcha is also excellent. It’s located right next to the Siz Senses Kyoto if you want to treat yourself xx.
There are so many other places! These are just some that may or may not be on the lists you already have. Get onigiri daily and try all the fruits.
Hi, I read this and it is amazing! I especially loved the part about Matsumoto’s Tobira Onsen. I recently wrote a newsletter about Nagano and would love to update it with a link to yours—it’s a fantastic resource more people should see.
